Barnardo’s is a British charity founded by Thomas John Barnardo in 1866, to care for vulnerable children. It raises around £200 million each year running around 900 local services, and is the UK’s largest children’s charity, in terms of charitable expenditure.

Due to the situation with COVID-19 Barnardo’s were looking to pilot a remote desktop solution that allowed their staff to work from home. Due to Alscient’s expertise in this area we were approached directly by AWS and introduced to Barnardo’s to assist with this rollout.

The requirements were to:

  • Design and provision a new and secure multi-account AWS infrastructure built to best practice with AWS Control Tower.
  • Assist with the provisioning of Application Streaming Services with Amazon AppStream 2.0.
  • Assist with the migration of existing WorkSpaces and AppStream images for continued development and testing.
  • Design and implement a suitable network/VPN solution for integration with on-premise services.
  • Implementation of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) services for user access to End User Compute (EUC) services.
  • Help to define a suitable Windows Update policy for WorkSpaces.
  • Assist with testing of EUC services.
  • Provide SSO integration using Okta.

Roedd angen i'r ateb terfynol i'r wladwriaeth gefnogi dros 1,000 o ddefnyddwyr drwy gymysgedd o fannau gwaith llawn ac Appstream ar gyfer y defnyddwyr hynny nad oedd angen ateb bwrdd gwaith llawn arnynt.  Cyflwynwyd cais etifeddiaeth drwy Amazon AppStream ac roedd gweddill yr apiau ar gael yn uniongyrchol drwy Amazon WorkSpaces. Crëwyd cysylltiad VPN safle-i-safle a Phorth Pontio rhwng AWS a'u seilwaith eu hunain i ganiatáu ar gyfer cysylltedd i wasanaethau ar y safle. Defnyddiwyd a chafodd AWS Lambda ei ddefnyddio a'i integreiddio hefyd gyda'r Cyfeiriadur Gweithredol i ddarparu a therfynu Mannau Gwaith Amazon. Yn ogystal, defnyddiwyd Tŵr Rheoli AWS i symleiddio'r gwaith parhaus o reoli cyfrifon AWS.

Cyflwynwyd y prosiect mewn tair wythnos. Yn ystod yr wythnos gyntaf cynhaliwyd cyfres o weithdai i gael y gofynion llawn ac i greu dogfen ddylunio i'w chymeradwyo. Yn ystod yr ail wythnos, cafodd yr ateb ei adeiladu a chynllun prawf yn cael ei greu. Yn ystod y drydedd wythnos cwblhawyd profion a throsglwyddwyd y system i Barnardo's i UAT. Ar ôl mynd yn fyw, darparwyd cymorth hyperofal wedyn gan ein swyddogaeth gwasanaeth a reolir ardystiedig ITIL. 

Y canlyniad

Cafodd y system ei chyflwyno'n brydlon a hefyd o'r gyllideb ac roedd yn caniatáu i staff Barnardo's gael mynediad at systemau craidd o'u hamgylchedd cartref. 

 Darparwyd ateb bwrdd gwaith o bell diogel o fewn tair wythnos. Roedd hyn yn caniatáu i ddefnyddwyr gael mynediad at adeilad safonol gyda phroses ailadroddus syml ar gyfer uwchraddio rhyddhau. Roedd yr ateb yn cefnogi mynediad i wasanaethau o fewn parth presennol Barnardo's ac yn darparu golwg a theimlad windows 10 cyfarwydd. 

Gweithiodd Alscient yn agos gyda Barnardo's i ddefnyddio'r gymysgedd fwyaf cost-effeithiol o Weithfannau ac Appstream llawn gan arwain at rannu tua 80:20 o blaid Appstream gan arwain at ostyngiad sylweddol mewn costau ar y defnydd a gynlluniwyd yn wreiddiol. 

Alscient provided an ongoing service to manage the estate and keep control of the cost base resulting in further savings for Barnardo’s on the overall running cost.
